Grohe's story
Since its inception, Grohe has always invested in technological evolution. Any company that intends to become a global icon must think about the future. What do customers want and what is the way to satisfy them? A great idea is not enough: to stay at the top, companies must constantly reinvent themselves. The Grohe brand has existed for over 80 years and has always offered its customers "Pure Freude an Wasser", water as pure joy, predicting and shaping the future use of water.
The company's inception coincided with a time when cities were growing rapidly and forward-thinking manufacturing companies had the opportunity to grow, evolve, compete and partner. Large numbers of people were starting to live and work together, dictating the need for new clean water concepts in homes, offices and hotels. Thus, steel companies such as Berkenhoff & Paschedag saw their future in sanitation, while small manufacturers such as Carl Nestler and Hans Grohe committed themselves to providing clean water to urban homes. When Friedrich Grohe , son of Hans Grohe, founded his own company in 1936 with the acquisition of Berkenhoff & Paschedag, the history of Grohe began , although the company took its owner's name only twelve years later. In 1956 Friedrich Grohe also took over Carl Nestler Armaturenfabrik, a company producing thermostats, and Grohe began producing cutting-edge sanitary ware. Friedrich Grohe was well aware of the long technical tradition he had behind him: "Made in Germany is synonymous with precision", he once said, "and precision is synonymous with Grohe".
In the first period, industrialized production was introduced in the sanitary ware sector, as well as two-handle taps and automatic drain valves, essential for home plumbing but not very revolutionary. In the years that followed, however, the company invented other designs, surpassing the basic models and creating products that anticipated customer needs. Thus the Skalatherm model was born in 1956, an automatic mixer with integrated thermostatic . This popular thermostat reached a precise temperature within seconds, becoming the mixer par excellence used in color photography laboratories where precise temperatures were needed due to the sensitivity of the developed films.
Although the Skalatherm model was intended for the domestic sector, Grohe captured the need for convenience by introducing the single-lever mixer globally in 1968. This allowed users to regulate the temperature and pressure of the water with a single valve. Following the product line expansion that introduced showers in the late 1970s, the company launched Relexor in 1983 – just the beginning of massaging shower systems . At the time, wellness and fitness were very popular and Grohe responded to this trend with a shower system that massaged the back with two adjustable rotating brushes. As ordinary as these functions may seem, they were hailed as revolutionary discoveries at the time, similarly to other company technologies such as Speed-Clean, CoolTouch or the 360° adjustable Movario shower head, launched in subsequent years.
Changing customer behavior and global trends, such as urbanization and digitalisation, give a strong impetus to technological development. Even as consumer needs around the home and water change, Grohe continues to live up to its reputation as a pioneering technology company.
